Simultaneous vs. 3+2 Axis Machining

Technically, adding two more axes to a traditional 3-axis setup results in a machine with five axes, but 3+2 is not truly equivalent to simultaneous 5-axis machining.

Simultaneous 5-axis machining diagram

Simultaneous 5-Axis Machining

All five axes move simultaneously. Continuous 5-axis machining adjusts movement on all axes without pause—ideal for highly complex geometries and smoother finishes in fewer setups.

3+2 axis machining diagram

3+2 Axis Machining

Three axes move while two are fixed at an angle. The rotary axes reposition the tool or part, then lock for 3-axis cutting—great for multi-angle features with rigid setups.

Trunnion vs. Swivel-Rotate

5-axis CNC machines share X, Y, and Z travel, but add the two rotary axes in different ways. The most common styles are trunnion and swivel-rotate.

Trunnion-style 5-axis machine

Trunnion-Style 5-Axis Machine

  • Workpiece: Moving table (tilts and rotates)
  • Axes: A-Axis (tilt), C-Axis (rotate)
  • Tools: Requires longer tools
  • Best for: Small to medium parts, freeform surfaces
  • Industries: Mold making, medical, aerospace
Swivel-rotate-style 5-axis machine

Swivel-Rotate-Style 5-Axis Machine

  • Workpiece: Stationary table, moving spindle
  • Axes: B-Axis (tilt), C-Axis (rotate)
  • Tools: Uses shorter tools
  • Best for: Large or heavy parts, housing-type parts
  • Industries: Aerospace, energy, electronic enclosures

5-Axis CNC Machining FAQs

5-axis CNC machining moves the cutting tool along five axes—X, Y, Z, A, and B—so complex parts can be fabricated precisely in a single setup. This reduces setup time, improves accuracy, and increases design flexibility.

Yes. Accessing five sides in one setup reduces repositioning error. Typical precision can reach as high as 0.005 mm, depending on geometry, material, and inspection requirements.

We machine aluminum, steel, stainless, titanium, copper alloys, engineering plastics (ABS, POM, PEEK, Nylon, and more), and other specialty materials for prototypes and production.

Choose 5-axis for complex shapes, multi-sided features, freeform surfaces, or when fewer setups and better surface access matter. 3-axis remains ideal for simpler geometries and the most cost-effective prismatic parts.
